about

I wanted to start a series of full length mixtapes where I make tracks spontaneously over a couple months and drop a full length project without trying to create a highly focused concept album. My inspiration for this comes from artists like Knxwledge who drop frequent off-the-cuff mixtapes as well as DJ Screw who's mixtapes often captured a moment in time for him through his features, shoutouts, and style switchups. In addition, as a biologist, my schedule tends to be very busy and I don't always have the time to dedicate many hours to a studio polishing a record. I also like to do field work where I may be traveling or be otherwise forced to use a cheap mobile setup. In order to balance these restrictions and still produce quality tracks, I started learning music making methods that would let me produce tracks quickly. The Chromatophores series is my way of putting tracks out relatively frequently that still capture my general mindset as well as the sounds and styles that I enjoyed working with at the time of writing.

None of the tracks on this album were made in a conventional DAW, with the exception of cutting some silence off of the "Machines Manufacture Dance" recording in Reaper. Instead, I used an Android app called Koala Sampler, Renoise, OpenMPT, and the live coding synthesizer and sampler SonicPi. Most of the samples I utilized were one shot percussion hits, synthesizer samples, drum breaks, baile funk loops, and some Memphis rap vocal loops from phonk packs. The most notable samples on this album are samples of terns, frogs, and beach ambience that I recorded myself. For these samples I just used my phone and Koala Sampler to record my surroundings, then chopped and arranged in whatever I was using to make the track.
